Just wanted to add I found this great website: http://organizedhome.com/ You can make a household notebook including cleaning list, calendars, address book, and pantry/freezer inventory. The pantry/freezer inventory is great to help with the grocery shopping and making sure you get exactly what you need. You just write everything down and then mark off when you run out of something!

I also try to shop WalMart only once or twice a month. I try to go to Bi-Lo to get their weekly BOGO specials. I clip coupons online and in the newspaper so that helps cut cost since Bi-Lo offers double coupons.

Having a weekly menu plan and a list are essential.

We try to have a "poor man's meal" once a week with beans, rice and cornbread. It is easy to prepare, cheap and filling. We eat fruit for dessert.

I totally agree with Jennifer Waters, because I do the very same thing, just that I go twice a month only because I have to pick up more formula and diapers. And for ex: If I get a bag of potatoes, celery, and carrots. I try to be creative and make several different things with it. One day I can make yellow rice with chicken and stemmed vegetables, I can make beef stew another, make honey carrots that I can serve with T-bones steak (split it with your husband), along with stuff baked potatoes. Also, I can cut up some celery and carrot into kids bite size, leave them in water and give it to the kids for snacks during the day. This way I save lots and we all eat healthy! I also stopped buying juice and we're drinking more water and eating fresh fruits. We cut down on red meat to once a week, because it can get pricey, so we eat more chicken. So when you go shopping, take your list and stay focus on it and you'll save a lot more money.

If you use dryer sheets, cut them in half. You get twice the sheets, and they work just as well.

I got a deep freezer a couple of years ago. This has saved a ton, b/c I can buy meat in bulk (like when they have the packages at the meat markets) and freeze it longer!

To stretch a dollar, I try to only shop at Walmart one time a month and stick to my list. I find that I spend money on things not on the list when I just browse through the store, and you can never come out of Walmart with less than $50-100 spent. So, I just try to only go one time a month for one big trip and I find that I spend less money that way. I make a list of meal items I need for the month before I go so that I can get all I realistically need for a month, including groceries and household items.
